The Work Holiday Party

Rachel Off Duty: The Work Holiday Party

As soon as Halloween comes and goes and Thanksgiving is out of the way, the Christmas-themed decor finds its way into every last crevice in your office. Your boss’s corner office, the reception area, and even your own desk, somehow, is covered in garland and lights and tinsel. You knew it was coming, but now it’s finally here–the work holiday party.

The question is honestly kind of cliche at this point, but every year, I still wonder the exact same thing, because no two work parties are ever the same. And this year, I’m in a whole new office, surrounded by a whole new crop of coworkers! No matter where you work, it’s tough to navigate the trepidatiously thin line between wanting to look seasonally sultry (read: “THAT’S the girl that sits in the corner cubicle? She looks AMAZING!”) and wanting to keep your appearance work-appropriate, especially since higher-ups will be in attendance. Obviously, the first approach sounds more fun. So how exactly do you accomplish that without having to pay a visit to HR the following Monday morning?

When it comes to work holiday parties, or any holiday event that I need to network or be on my A-game for, I like to go for a look that’s 75% work appropriate / expected, and then incorporate 1 or 2 statement pieces into the mix that transform your outfit from being “just-another-Tuesday-at-the-job” to “I’ll-take-a-Christmas-cocktail-with-a-side-of-holiday-salary-bonus, please.” This holiday season, you’ll probably see me rocking this emerald green crushed velvet off-the-shoulder bodysuit with other more work-friendly pieces like a pencil skirt or a pair of wide-legged jeans and heels. Best for cocktail- or dinner-focused work holiday parties, it’s chic and refined, with just the right touch of holiday sultriness to kick things up a notch from my regular 9-to-5 mainstays.
